What is Addiction?
Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences (American Society of Addiction Medicine).
How Common is Addiction?
Approximately 10% of any population is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Addiction is more common than diabetes, which occurs in approximately 7% of the population.
Causes of Addiction
• Family history of addiction.
• Past trauma.
• The brain and body exerting influence in the decision to continue using.
• Underlying anxiety or depression.
